Music
Our Music Department provides high quality music courses as well as a full range of opportunities for practical music-making at all levels of ability. The Department is located in several sites around the school grounds, but the main teaching area is ‘Ash Grove’, a detached house on the south of the campus. This is where all curricular and some extra curricular music teaching takes place.

Year 7 and Year 9 classes are taught in half classes on a 'carousel' basis. Year 8 have a 1-hour lesson per fortnight throughout the year. The curriculum is based around three main activities: Performing, Composing and Listening. Lessons are themed in half term ‘units’ which follow a clear course of study and incorporate a wide variety of experiences and activities. Each unit is carefully designed so that it has a good balance of practical and theoretical activities. We have a new suite of PCs with Cubase and Sibelius software
GCSE Music (AQA) is offered to all Year 10 and Year 11 pupils as an option and also to Year 9 and Year 10 pupils who wish to start GCSE a year early as a ‘twilight’ subject. Pupils are taught for 2½ hours per week.
The course includes:
- solo and ensemble performing
- composing techniques
- an exploration of music from the western classical tradition plus popular music of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Extra-curricular music making at Sheffield Girls'
At lunchtimes, there are many opportunities for instrumentalists and singers of all abilities. Our ensembles include: Concert Band, 7UP (choir for Y7) Sixth Form Choir, Theory and Aural Clinic, Songwriters' Club, 'Rock School', Piano Club, Ensemble Club, Swing Band, String Academy, Senior Strings, Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir as well as other smaller groups which are set up as the need arises.
Our 16 highly qualified visiting teachers provide instrumental and voice tuition within school hours. Music is highly valued at Sheffield High School and we are very proud of our young musicians’ achievements.

Tuition Fees for Musical Instruments and Associated Disciplines (charged by visiting teachers)
Tuition is available in a variety of musical instruments and disciplines including piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, piccolo, oboe, bassoon, recorder, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, French horn, guitar, double bass, voice, percussion and harp.
For each discipline there are approximately 33 lessons per year each lasting 30 minutes.
