Sheffield Girls' wishes ‘Felicidades’ to our A Level Linguists for fantastic results and university offers

Against the landscape of a decline in uptake of MFL subjects nationally, we are delighted that our A Level’ linguists have received outstanding results this year with 67% of French grades A*-A and 50% of Spanish grades A*-A.

Three of our linguists also have places to study an exciting range of languages courses at three top Russell Group universities. Melbournian Isobel, who achieved an A* in French, will be going to Durham University to study Modern European Languages. She mentioned that she was keen to pursue languages for the opportunities they afford, and given that they ‘open so many doors’.

Emily, also a Melbournian, achieved an A in Spanish and will be going to Bristol University to study History and Spanish. She reflected this morning about her time at Sheffield Girls’, commenting that her love of languages began in Year 7 and has never ‘really felt like a subject, more like a hobby!’.

Imogen, who received an A* in Spanish, will be going to the University of Oxford to study Beginners’ Italian and Spanish. She gave particular thanks to the opportunities her teachers have given her throughout her time at Sheffield Girls’, reflecting on a particularly formative experience offered by Miss Barker: “She paired me up with an exchange student when I was in Year 11 and I fell in love with the languages because I love my teachers!” Our foreign exchange programme is a core part of our MFL curriculum and we’re so delighted that this experience inspired Imogen to pursue languages in her future studies.

One of our core values at Sheffield Girls’ is a commitment to instilling within our students an inherent curiosity and interest in the world around them. We do this through crafting a curriculum designed to instil in every girl an appreciation of culture, diversity and difference, whether that be through our exciting programme of trips or, indeed, our language courses. Languages are taught to girls from Year 1 - Year 13, and French, German and Spanish are popular courses at both GCSE and A Level. We are also proud to offer DELF qualifications in French, offering girls the opportunity to significantly advance their proficiency in French.

Our MFL and languages curriculum is complemented by our Extra-Curricular and enrichment programme which gives girls further opportunities to expand their world-views and learn new perspectives through Languages Clubs, international spelling bees and trips.

This year’s MFL A Level results are testament that against the backdrop of lower national uptake in languages courses, this trend is not the case at Sheffield Girls’, where languages  remain a thriving part of our curriculum.

Huge well done to all of our linguists again on their fantastic results!
