Sheffield Girls’ students network and explore Post-18 pathways as part of National Apprenticeship Week

Throughout the week our students have been taking advantage of a timetable full of activities centred around National Apprenticeship Week, which aims to bring together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

We kicked off the week with the next instalment in our careers speaker series - Live Lunch. Live Lunch provides Senior School and Sixth Form students with the opportunity to hear from alumnae about their career pathways and take away some top tips for the world of work.

We were delighted to welcome Georgina and Becky (Class of 2012) from HBD (Henry Boot), who spoke about their experiences as young women in the property industry and how different their journeys had been to reach their current roles. Georgina spoke about her degree apprenticeship and the benefits it provided in giving her a head start into her career and financial independence at a young age. She also reminded students about the importance of considering the wide range of Post 18 pathways available, in addition to the more traditional higher education routes: ‘there are so many options out there, if you’re unsure of what to do, do something that you love, but also take the time to explore all your options.’ Becky discussed the value of gaining varied work experience: ‘applying for work experience after my degree got me my job, take as many opportunities as you can’.

Careers Fair

Our students also had the opportunity to network with 23 universities, 18 companies and 25 employer experts at a local careers fair. ‘The careers fair yesterday was amazing, and I learned a lot about a range of jobs and universities’ Year 12 student.

Alongside these events, our Library featured a display of useful materials and sources of information about apprenticeships. Years aslo 10 - 12 enjoyed a webinar hosted by the NHS, discussing the wide variety of available apprenticeships they have available and our Head of Careers launched a dedicated hub of apprenticeship information on our student intranet.
