Sheffield Girls’ Infant & Junior School Pupils Take Part in National Gallery ‘Take One Picture’ Project

We are so excited to be taking part in the Take One Picture programme this year to nurture our budding Infant & Junior artists’ curiosity and creative flair. Run by the National Gallery, Take One Picture sees pupils engage with an extended project inspired by a famous artwork to encourage a lifelong love of art.

During the project, our girls have spent the past few months engaging in a series of sessions exploring Pieter de Hooch’s ‘The Courtyard of a House in Delft’. The project also brings the opportunity for our pupils’ works to be potentially selected for a photo montage which will be displayed at the National Gallery in summer 2025.

As well as nurturing pupils’ inherent curiosity and creativity, our participation in the Take One Picture project has allowed for a number of cross-curricular links, enabling pupils to begin to make complex connections between their subjects. The child-led ethos of the project aligns strongly with our approach at Sheffield Girls’, where we encourage our ‘Girls of Steel’ to take ownership over their learning from an early age to become the leaders of tomorrow.

We were delighted to officially celebrate the project with our girls with a whole school art enrichment day on Wednesday 25th September. In true Sheffield Girls’ style, our pupils weren’t afraid to immediately get stuck into examining the painting and its various interpretations. Every class took a different approach to their initial explorations, with some classes sculpting secret gardens from found objects, others creating sculptures of children at play and some using programming software to recreate details in the painting using coded embroidery.

The art enrichment day was the perfect culmination of the project and our girls went home buzzing with inspiration for their future artistic endeavours. One student in Year 3 commented: “I'm shocked at what I've managed to do. At first I thought I couldn't do it, then I got a bit of help and I'm proud of myself”, whilst another in Year 5 commented: “I've enjoyed problem solving and perseverance!”

Charlotte Puddephatt, who has spearheaded our involvement in the project and leads on Infant & Junior Art, commented “The girls have had a fantastic day creating their response to this year's "Take One Picture" painting. We’re always delighted by the insightful, creative and inquisitive approach to art and design our young pupils display in Infant and Juniors. Whether they are learning about new artists and artwork, mastering new artistic skills or developing a sense of their own unique creative styles and preferences, it’s a joy to see their high levels of interest and observations and the way they tackle new activities and challenges!”

The artworks our girls created during their Art Enrichment Day will be on display in our very own mini exhibition at our Whole School Open Morning on Saturday 12th October, and we can’t wait to celebrate what they created!
