Sheffield Girls' inaugural Infant and Junior School Careers Day

This week, Sheffield Girls’ Infant and Junior School hosted its inaugural Careers Day, giving pupils the opportunity to explore different careers and discover new dreams and aspirations.

From building spaghetti and marshmallow structural masterpieces like true engineers, to discovering what the men and women of the England football teams eat to stay on top of their game, our girls spent the day partaking in a series of career masterclasses expertly crafted and led by a selection of parent and external volunteers.

The day was hosted by Mrs Metcalfe-Murgatroyd, Head of Careers, and our pupils delighted our volunteers with their enthusiasm and natural curiosity -  a welcome reminder of our girls’ ability to continually demonstrate positivity and kindness in everything they do.

Commenting on their experience of the day, one volunteer said: “It was really rewarding and thanks for making me feel looked after. I’m so glad the girls enjoyed it, they all made me feel really welcome, it’s such a lovely school and a super event to have.”

Further highlights from the masterclasses included the chance for the girls to diagnose poorly teddy bears as they role-played GPs, investigate bone structures and improve their balance as physiotherapists, and further test their business decision making skills in a how to be a CEO budgeting bootcamp.

Reflecting on the intentions and purposes behind the day, Mrs Metcalfe-Murgatroyd said:

“I designed the day to help motivate our younger students to think about their futures and open their minds to a variety of career sectors - I am firm believer in the concept of 'see it, be it' and love inviting employers into our school to show students first hand what they do and the skills they use. Research tells us that the more employers a student meets, the more employable they become! I cannot thank our parent and external volunteers enough, they went above and beyond with their talks and the activities that they had planned and I know that the students loved it and learnt so much!”

A huge thank you to our parent and external volunteers who gave their time so generously to support our pupils.

We are delighted to be one of only two schools in the region to be awarded the prestigious Career Mark Platinum Award, and our Infant and Juniors Careers Day is just one example of how we innovate and deliver careers excellence at Sheffield Girls’. We provide regular year-group specific Careers Spotlight events and a series of alumnae speaker sessions, ‘Live Lunch’ in the Senior School showcasing this commitment to embedding careers education into every stage of our pupils’ Sheffield Girls’ journey.
