Sheffield Girls’ Bids a Fond Farewell to Mrs Gunson

Today, Sheffield Girls’ celebrated the incredible contributions of Mrs Gunson, who steps down as Head after more than six years of dedicated leadership. Her time at the school, which also included a period as our Deputy Head, has been marked by positivity, courage and kindness, and she leaves a lasting legacy within our school community.

Reflecting on her time at the school, Mrs Gunson said: “During my time here, I have witnessed countless moments of brilliance: pupils’ resilience in the face of challenges, their eagerness to learn and grow, and their unwavering kindness, positivity and courage. Each one of our girls carries a unique light,  which I hope they will use to make a positive impact in the world.

“It has been my honour to nurture that light, to watch it flourish in the classroom, on the sports field, in concerts, and beyond. Yet I know that the true brilliance comes from the dedication of our staff who keep the school glowing brightly, and the foundation of love, support, and encouragement you provide at home. Together, we have created a community that champions every girl, helping her to shine as her best and truest self.

As I prepare to embark on a new chapter in Hong Kong, I will carry the light of Sheffield High School with me - its values, its spirit, and its unwavering commitment to excellence. Though I may be thousands of miles away, the glow of Sheffield Girls’ will remain in my heart.”

Mrs Gunson’s leadership saw the school through significant milestones, including navigating the challenges of the pandemic. Under her guidance, pupils thrived through innovative e-learning strategies, the development of our ‘Girls of Steel’ character education programme, and an ever growing co-curricular programme of activities, events, trips and opportunities. In 2023 Sheffield Girls’ received two prestigious accolades, being named The Sunday Times Independent Secondary School of the Year in the North, and Prep School of the Year.

During Mrs Gunson tenure as Head, the school has celebrated exceptional academic results and last year an impressive 27% of A Level grades were awarded at grade A*, well above the national average of 9%, and 31% of GCSE results achieved a Grade 9, compared to the national average of just 5%.

Mrs Gunson’s unwavering commitment to pupils and staff will be greatly missed, as will her huge collection of Christmas jumpers, signature bright lipstick and incredible range of shoes!

As she embarks on an exciting new challenge in Hong Kong,  we wish her every success and thank her for her remarkable service to Sheffield Girls’.
