Peter's Commute

Seventy sixth formers and 17 teachers raised more than £2,250 charity cash following a sponsored six mile sunny walk to school. The group took part in Peter’s Commute, a fundraising event inspired by the story of Peter Msongelwa, an A level student in rural Zimbabwe who used to walk 15 miles to school each day.

The sponsored walk was raising money for the charity Makomborero, a small UK based Charity set up by Mark and Laura Albertyn to relieve poverty and advance education in their native Zimbabwe, which does amazing work to help to young people in similar positions.

Walkers left Whirlowbrook Hall and headed to the Rutland Park school via a beautiful route on footpaths passing through woodland, open countryside and parks, eventually reaching Hunter’s Bar roundabout and finishing at school via Brocco Bank and the Botanical Gardens.

Head of Maths, Mr Campbell, who organised the walk said: ''We did it! What a fantastic morning weather-wise and a great effort by everyone involved. Not only was it huge fun but we have smashed our target of £1,500. Thank you to everyone who took part and donated to this amazing cause'.

The school has raised more than £15,000 for the charity since Stuart Campbell first met Peter in 2011. Money raised by Peter’s Commute goes directly to fund scholarships for A level students from some of the most deprived areas of the country.
