A Roman Residential

Year 3 went back in time discovering Roman history on their two-day residential trip to Losehill Hall, Castleton.

Losehill Hall is part of the decades old Youth Hostels Association, which was originally established “to help all, but especially young people, to greater knowledge, use and love of the countryside.” As the facilities have modernised over the years, the opportunities for young people to learn have expanded to include hands-on experiences in authentic historical settings, such as Losehill Hall’s replica Celtic village, a purpose-built mine, and an underground archeological dig.

The girls had a wonderful time in the sprawling Victorian mansion, set within 27 acres of stunning Peak District parkland. The class got immersed in a timeline of British history and took part in activities including a thrilling Roman battle and making siege engines, then getting creative with candle making and striking gold with gem panning. After a tiring day, the girls made some delicious fresh bread to snack on, just like in historical times.
