Chemistry at Sheffield Girls’

We view Chemistry as an experimental science and believe in a rich diet of experimental and demonstration work designed to stimulate curiosity and an interest in methods of enquiry. We aim to give our students a thorough grounding in the principles and applications of Chemistry and to make them aware that these applications can be both beneficial and detrimental to the individual, the community and to the environment.

GCSE Chemistry

Chemistry is popular throughout Senior School and continues to be so into GCSE. At Key Stage 4, students study for the iGCSE award as we see this as good preparation for the new A-level syllabus. It gives a grounding in essential Chemistry knowledge and application.

Practical skills are integrated into lessons throughout the year with these being examined in the final examinations.

Extra-curricular Activities

We recognise that extra-curricular activities are important and aim to involve our students in as many out-of-class activities as possible. We have a huge range of opportunities available to our students during KS3 and KS4 - and going into A-level Chemistry.

Some examples include:

  • Salters’ Festival of Chemistry
  • Salters’ Chemistry Camps
  • Spectroscopy workshop at Sheffield University
  • Young Analyst Competition
  • RSC Olympiad

The girls increase their self-confidence and develop many skills by being involved in these events, such as presentation, communication and teamwork skills. They often achieve very highly in competitions too!
