Sheffield Girls' Senior School (Years 7 to 11) has around 600 girls who use the excellent facilities across the Senior School campus for their lessons and activities.
Broad Secondary School Curriculum
The girls follow a broad curriculum in Years 7 to 9. All the girls study separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics and they all study two Modern Languages (French, German or Spanish) and add Latin in Year 8. A wide range of GCSE core and optional subjects are offered in Years 10 and 11. Most girls will take 9 subjects at GCSE, although some will take 10 if they choose an additional subject outside the normal curriculum. We offer 23 GCSE subjects, including three separate science subjects and six modern foreign or classical languages. For more information on our GCSE offer, please see the Senior School Curriculum page.
Excellent Examination Results
Year 11 and Year 13 pupils at Sheffield Girls' consistently perform extremely well and our results are amongst the best Secondary Schools in the area.
Statistics nationally continue to show that girls gain better results if educated in a single-sex secondary school environment. Recent research shows that the percentage of A grades achieved at A level by girls in independent single sex schools in Sciences, Maths, Further Maths, French, History and Geography was on average 10% higher than girls in independent co-educational schools.
The encouragement and nurturing provided in a single sex secondary school builds girls’ confidence and gives them the skills to leave school at 18 as dynamic young women, able to hold their own and go on to be successful in their chosen careers.
We also offer an exciting range of extra-curricular activities. There are excellent opportunities to be involved in Music, Drama, Art and Sport with the girls often excelling at national level in a wide range of disciplines. For a detailed view of the activities we offer, see our Extra-Curricular Activities page.
As girls progress through to their later years in the Senior School, they undertake two weeks of Work Experience in Year 11. In Years 10 and 11, girls also have the opportunity to be involved in our award-winning Young Enterprise Programme. This offers an exciting opportunity for our students to run a real business and learn key skills of team work, financial management and entrepreneurship.
In their GCSE years, girls are also offered the opportunity to take part in our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme which aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development.
In Year 10 girls can start on the Bronze Award programme and move on to the Silver Award programme in Year 11. The four parts of the Award cover helping people in the community, a hobby, skill or interest, physical recreation and planning and completing a journey on foot or horseback, by boat or cycle. The Award is widely recognised by employers and people involved in education.
Sixth Form and beyond
Most girls in Year 11 progress to our Sixth Form and are joined by up to 20 students who transfer to us from other secondary schools in Sheffield. We support our students in whatever they choose to study at university and well over 90% will achieve offers from their first choice university. We offer comprehensive support students wishing to apply to Oxbridge, university in the States or Europe and those who wish to move directly into employment.
