Fascinating Ferns

Where in the world can you find ferns?  How old are ferns?  How do they reproduce?  What are the names of the largest and the smallest ferns?  Why are the smallest ferns in the world banned from the UK?  What can you tell about the type of fern by its name?

These questions and more were answered by Mr Shaw, Head of Biology in our Senior School, when he visited Year 5 this week to talk about his favourite subject: ferns.  Mr Shaw brought along some of his own ferns for the girls to explore and also gave them the chance to plant their very own spores, which, by the time they are in Year 7, should have grown into beautiful baby plants they can pot on and grow to maturity.
