Best Sport in Sheffield: SFSS Award

We are incredibly proud of our Infant and Junior School PE department, who have won the highly sought-after Primary School Sports Award for 2017-18, from the Sheffield Federation for School Sports.

The award is given to the Sheffield primary school which has achieved the most notable overall sporting success, as well as providing a wide range of opportunities for pupils over the current year. It is a testament to the hard work and commitment of Sheffield Girls’ to receive this award and be recognised for the momentous efforts of the staff and pupils to exceed all expectations.

Emma Dickson and Jane Cooke, Teaching Staff, commented, “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award, celebrating the achievement, success and participation of all of our girls.  Our extensive programme of extra curricular sports clubs and rich curriculum provide every girl with the opportunity to develop skills and compete competitively in numerous sports. Our success nationally in two sports and locally across Sheffield is down to the commitment of not only P.E staff, but hard work and determination of our pupils.''

Our Infant and Junior PE department has gone above and beyond in 2017/2018 - pupils have competed in more than 100 sporting events across Sheffield and England and can participate in 32 sports clubs ranging from traditional sport to Jazz Dance and Martial Arts. Every girl is encouraged to get involved, and there is absolutely something for everyone, from Reception to Year 6.

Gymnastics in particular is at the heart of our sport, with nearly 50% of the school community taking part in the Gymnastics, Trampolining and Dance Performance Evening. Overall, over 40 girls have represented the school across Gymnastics and Trampolining, including trips to Belfast and London to compete, and many now hold regional or national rankings. Also held in school is the three annual inter-house sports events for every girl in Year 4, 5 and 6 to play Netball, Hockey and Rounders, to build up not only their athletic skills but also their organisation and teamwork.

With the SFSS, girls take part in a range of competitions including cross country, netball, badminton, and athletics. We hosted the SFSS Primary Netball Tournament for U10’s in the spring, and the local round of matches for the SFSS Primary Netball League. The girls beat tough competition to become both U10 and U11 champions. In athletics, despite having only half of a full team, we defied the odds to qualify for the South Yorkshire Finals and several girls took well-earned podium places.

Like ducks to water, girls also excelled in swimming: they were North East Relay Team Medley and Freestyle champions at ESSA Primary Swimming, 3rd in the Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay in the ESSA National Primary School Relay Finals, and overall winners of the Inter-School Gala we hosted against other schools in the region.

The award was presented to the school on Monday 3 December during the annual presentation evening at Sheffield Town Hall.
